The Tresco community is mourning the loss of Pete Locke, a much-loved islander, craftsman, husband, and cherished member of the local community who has died at the age of 96. Born and raised on Tresco, Pete dedicated virtually his entire life to the island and left behind a remarkable legacy of craftsmanship, character, and community spirit.
Pete was born and bred on Tresco and grew up at North End Cottage. His working life began at an exceptionally young age after he left school at 14. In those early years, he developed an entrepreneurial spirit, earning a shilling delivering telegrams and an additional sixpence for carrying milk from the dairy to the Abbey.
After completing National Service and undertaking a variety of jobs around the island, Pete trained as a carpenter. The trade became an important part of his life, and he continued practising his craft on Tresco for more than five decades.
Those who knew Pete remembered him as warm, modest, and quietly talented. Despite reaching an advanced age, he remained remarkably active and independent well into later life. His determination was perhaps best demonstrated by his occasional willingness to climb onto the roof of his shed to carry out repairs himself.
Pete was also known for the simple pleasures that reflected his character and connection to island life. His home-brewed apple wine became something of a local talking point, while his greenhouse was renowned for producing flourishing tomatoes.
Yet perhaps Pete’s greatest joy was his family life with Rose. The couple were married for almost 50 years and became one of Tresco’s most cherished couples. Pete spoke warmly about their relationship, once describing the importance of Rose in his life with the words: “Rose has made the rest of my life.”
Their long marriage represented a deep bond built on companionship, love, and shared experiences. Pete’s passing leaves Rose and the wider family facing a profound loss after nearly five decades together.
One of Pete’s most remarkable legacies to Tresco is his intricate shell village. Created painstakingly from treasures collected from the island’s beaches, the miniature village features island cottages, the school, and even the church.
The extraordinary creation became something enjoyed by both islanders and visitors. It stands as a lasting example of Pete’s patience, imagination, craftsmanship, and deep affection for the place he called home.
For a man who lived a relatively quiet life, Pete made a remarkable contribution to the island. Through his carpentry, his shell village, his friendships, and his everyday presence, he became part of the fabric of Tresco life.
